XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Hey SistersPlease put these dates on your calendars. There is no cost to attend. You just pay for whatever you drink or eat. I think this is going to end up being a great networking opportunity for women in the MBA and the industry. You do not have to be a member to come. It doesn’t take much time, but what a great opportunity to see each other as well as meet new people. Please invite anyone whom you think would like this event each month. You don’t have to attend every time, but we hope you do! 2nd Wednesday of the month starting in November. P.S. you don’t have to drink alcohol to enjoy the time. You can drink whatever you want. By vote of the members March 13th 2007. The Statement of Principles of the NCPE is as follows.
- True equality for the millions of women and minorities in the work force will not be achieved until there is pay equity.
- Achievement of pay equity will benefit millions of households, particularly the growing number headed by women.
- The drive for implementation of pay equity must be seen as reversal of a historical pattern of devaluing work done by women and minorities.
- While it is crucial that all occupations be open to women and minorities, efforts must continue to find solutions to the problems of workers in female-and-minority-dominated occupations.
- Pay equity is an intrinsic part of the goal of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and of the Equal Rights Amendment.
National Committee on Pay Equity Members The NCPE annual meeting will be Tuesday, Dec. 9 at 2 pm at AFT, 555 New Jersey Ave. NW in the 9th floor conference room. All NCPE organizational and individual members are welcome at the meeting; however, only representatives of organizational members have a vote and are elegible for election to the NCPE Board of Directors. Please let me know if your organization wishes to stand for election to a 2-year term on the board, in one of three categories: labor unions/workforce representatives, women’s organizations, or civil rights organizations. Board business is conducted electronically almost exclusively, with only task force meetings and the annual meeting held during the year. If you or someone you know has, an ARM adjusting soon, you can call and get help now, to re-negotiate, if it has, you can still call to re-set the terms of your loan so that you are not paying an arm and a leg. If you know someone who is now in foreclosure, it can still be re-negotiated and rewritten. There are a lot of scams out there, and people do not like to discuss such private issues when they are in a finical crisis, so please share with all. The below is the real deal. The Homeownership Preservation Foundation has a single mission: to help homeowners avoid foreclosure. We are an independent nonprofit that provides HUD-approved counselors dedicated to helping homeowners. The help we offer is free.
Our counselors are experts in foreclosure prevention and trained to set up a plan of action designed just for you and your situation. When you talk to us, you won’t be judged and you won’t pay a dime. That’s because we don’t just offer general advice - we help you take action. I have sad news to share. One of our homeowners, Sharon Pierson, unexpectedly passed away on October 3rd. She leaves behind an adopted nine year old daughter, Abigail.
Sharon’s house was the Women Build 2003 home on Jane Russell Way.
Sharon’s obituary is in today’s News Tribune. Her funeral will be held Monday, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, 608 South 34th Street, Tacoma, 98418.
A fund has been set up at Key Bank to cover burial expenses and for the care of Abigail. I know your support would be appreciated.
Please keep Sharon and her family in your prayers.

South Oregon Tradeswomen GroupDear Sisters in the trades, October has crept up on me, but this coming Friday will be the second Friday of the month and time for our dinner gathering. Alas, summer seems to be over, so the pleasant outdoor dinning we’ve enjoyed will have to be suspended for the fall and winter. Let’s return to Casa Ramos on Riverside in Medford for this month, since that seems agreeable to most.Friday, November 14th at 6:00pmCasa Ramos, 1253 N RiversideThere has been an on-going conversation about changing the format of our gatherings. Some feel that a restaurant is too expensive and thus women who would like to attend are put off by the cost. In the past we have meet in different inexpensive or free venues and brought our own dinner. We’ve also tried potluck. After awhile the consensus of the group was to return to meeting in restaurants. However, perhaps it is time to try something different again. If so, where would you like to meet? The suggestion has also made that we have a more formal program with guest speakers. If this idea appeals to you, who would you like to have speak or what topics would be of interest? Also, who will make the arrangements? Please email me your thoughts on this issue or give me a call. Also, does Friday night feel like the best time to meet? If not, what would you suggest? As always, my intent is to reach out to as many women possible who are working in the trades, or who want to be. This is your forum; how can it best serve you?Thank you for taking a little time to share your thoughts with me. I look forward to seeing you on Friday. Warm thoughts, JeanneJeanne Schraub, Construction Technology Instructor, Rogue Community College, 541-245-7994

Building News
Construction Jobs Growing but Not for Women or African-Americans
As Congress contemplates another economic stimulus bill focused on transportation construction, a new report shows that women and minorities are least likely to receive the benefit of those jobs.
The report, “The Road to Good Jobs: Patterns of Employment in the Construction Industry,” an expansion of last year’s first-ever such study, also notes that building public transit and maintaining highways would create more - and greener - jobs than building highways.Researchers at the University of Missouri - St. Louis examined minority and female employment in 25 metro areas and found that white males dominate construction work, regardless of the racial and gender makeup of the local workforce as a whole. Overall, the authors calculate that 137,044 black workers are “missing” from the construction workforce in those large metropolitan areas. In other words, if blacks participated in construction at the same rate they participated in all industries, thousands more blacks would be employed in construction. The 25 metropolitan areas, listed by population, are New York, NY, Los Angeles, CA, Chicago, IL, Philadelphia, PA, Dallas, Miami, Washington (DC), Houston, Detroit, Boston, Atlanta, San Francisco, Riverside (CA), Phoenix, Seattle, Minneapolis, San Diego, St. Louis, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Tampa, Denver, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Portland, OR.“The Road to Good Jobs” offers several proposals to provide millions of Americans with good jobs and create a green economy. The federal government currently spends about $60 billion dollars a year on transportation. The next federal transportation bill, scheduled for reauthorization in 2009, provides an opportunity to ensure that transportation spending does the most to stimulate the economy while providing good jobs to the people that most need them.XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXNotes on History of Women in the Construction Industry……..Executive Order 11246, signed by President Lyndon B. Equal Pay Act http://www.eeoc.gov/abouteeoc/35th/thelaw/epa.html Women’s Bureau initiatives between 1977 and 1981. The Bureau made significant contributions to the Department’s affirmative action efforts to expand opportunities for women in apprenticeship programs and in the construction industry. Policy involved amendments to Executive Order 11278 by President Carter. 1978 set hiring goals of 6.9% and hiring timetables for women on federally funded projects. The goals were never reached. http://www.dol.gov/oasam/programs/history/carter-wb.htmXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
On Equal Terms: A Mixed Media Installation
by Susan Eisenberg
On Equal Terms combines realistic and fanciful works of art with personal testimonies to bring viewers into the frontline experience of the first tradeswomen who crossed onto construction sites. Coinciding with the 30th anniversary of Affirmative Action, the exhibition celebrates the pioneers, as well as the tradeswomen and their allies who have kept the gates open for three decades. On Equal Terms honors the construction industry, while aiming to increase employment equity for women in the trades. The exhibition focuses conversation about the cost of gender barriers in any occupation – and what it would mean to treat all individuals on equal terms.Susan Eisenberg, an artist, poet, activist, WSRC Scholar, and master electrician, has interviewed more than thirty other women in the trades about their experiences. Her multi-media installation reflects these candid conversations. Curated by Wendy Tarlow Kaplan.
